Sideways step

I have begun investigating the possibilities for making associations between other objects and the golden taffeta dress in my paintings. With the help of my useful assistant, I took a golden ‘space blanket’ out into the hills at Dorback, in Strathspey, to create some reference images. I wanted to take some photographs which referenced the material in the Abbot Hall dress, the Scottish landscape, and art historical references such as the flying drapery in Titian’s Bacchus and Ariadne.

Ottobah Cugoano: ‘who would buy and sell their God as they do his creatures’.

Landowner the omnipotent God?

If the God Bacchus was bought or sold only the cloak would remain.

Most importantly the flying golden blanket is now in the dream sequence of the film, so it must also feature in a painting.

Detail from Bacchus and Ariadne.
